Weight and length data for slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) and mottled sculpin (C. bairdi) were collected in August and October of 1995 from the West Twin River drainage in northeast Wisconsin. Patchy distribution from eastern Siberia through most of Alaska, Canada and the Northern United States south to Virginia along the East Coast. Hartford, CT. An interspecific comparison of weight-length regressions of sculpin collected in October revealed that at a given length, slimy sculpin were heavier than mottled sculpin.

"Slimy the Sculpin" is also an indicator of clean water and can be found in pristine mountain streams.

Although locally common, slimy sculpins are not often seen because of their small size and excellent camouflage. Iowa's natural resources plates include the state bird and flower, pheasant, eagle, buck and a Brook trout.
