In order to enable those display modes, a soft mod would be necessary to convert the system to NTSC. The burnt plastic fumes aren’t very healthy, and it wouldn’t cut through metal, but otherwise it seems like a pretty cool idea.

Does the port fall into the Xbox every time you use it? If only the original Xbox had an HDMI port.
We have found this out in the Arcades as we buy many new T.V.s a month because of damage, breakage etc and are having a hard time sourcing T.V.s with anything but HDMI connectors on them, (new arcade games use HDMI but our older games need a DSub connector). I plan on doing a similar mod to my Xbox 360, but maybe using a VGA to HDMI converter instead. Yes, instead of cutting the hole in the case the stock video output port could be removed. The Xbox can display video over VGA with some modifications. Keep in mind that this tray is used to help route air from the fans through the areas that need cooled, so you don’t want to cut away too much plastic. There are guides on how to disassemble the Xbox if you haven’t done this step before. I covered the areas I worked on with electrical tape to prevent the solder points from making contact with the metal case of the Xbox. Make sure they’re as short as possible. There’s no confirmed release date, but it’s looking like some time next year. There’s a new project being teased that’s a true digital-to-digital HDMI mod for the original Xbox. Nice. We are currently testing a collection of DSub to HDMI convertors so as to keep our older arcade games alive. Heating up the existing solder points, and adding a little bit extra solder, will make attaching wires slightly easier. In other words I can still play games just fine. Surprisingly, I was able to get better image quality through the internal component cable wiring than through cheap aftermarket component cables, but you may get different results depending on how you wired everything. iwas looking at mking a component break out box using a regular AV cable (red, white, yellow) desoldering the pins and adding the cables for the components and the pins to activate advanced AV pack. Interesting. Dont buy any adapters that are converting component to HDMI, just wait for the proper solution due out next year. In my case I connected a pair of thicker wires to the underside of the 20-pin ATX connector. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You could buy a component cable for your system, but official Microsoft cables are hard to find and expensive. Why didn’t you just leave the component to HDMI converter box outside of the console? You can force 480p modes with a custom BIOS on those games, but if for some reason the only Xbox games you’re interested in are original discs on an unmodded console in 480i, some good component cables and an OSSC might be your best bet.

Here’s a review of the MakeMHz HDMI mod for the original Xbox. It probably has to do with your wiring. The most important difference between an analog-to-digital mod (or cable) and this is that the signal is tapped right from the GPU’s encoder before its converted to analog, resulting in a noise-free, 1:1 representation of the signal. You will need to completely remove the motherboard, so that you can access the solder points for the video connector underneath the board. This would be the ideal mod.
Yeah, it works externally as well, you’ll just need some original Xbox component video cables. You’ll want to use a multimeter to determine which solder points correspond to which parts of the jack. This is actually a great idea.

Video is captured directly off of the pixel data bus from the GPU, encoded, and sent directly to your HD TV with no added interpolation or frame-buffering for a crystal clear, no added lag, video output. This mod is a great way to make the original Xbox a more modern console that is more convenient to connect to modern HDTVs. I don’t at this time, but that’s something I’d like to do.
If you would like to continue to use the AV port for composite, you will want to connect those two pairs of solder points through external switches, instead of directly bridging the connections.
